The best part of setting a new goal? It’s the thrill of thinking about achieving something we long for or dream about! We tell ourselves “This time I’m really going to do it!” or “My life will be wonderful when I’ve mastered ____”. We envision our future selves kicking out what we desire…and oh, our life will be so much better as a result!
Yep, the stage of identifying what we want is always the easiest part of the process…because we haven’t started yet! But when it’s time to get real..to execute…then what happens? Do we talk about it but not do it? Are we thinking of all the reasons why we can’t do it yet? Is it put it off for another day? How do we get going when procrastination knocks on our door?
The Secret Starter
One thing I’ve learned to get going is this: Don’t overthink what I need to do. In other words, I just proceed with doing what has to be done when it’s time to do it. OK, stay with me now: I know this sounds super-simplistic but honestly, it’s the secret sauce that world-class athletes use. So let’s dig in a little deeper to understand how these folks accomplish what they do.
Whatever “it” is for you, any new habit or goal is going to require hard work and commitment. It truly doesn’t matter if your goal is your life’s passion, a burning desire or just a common household chore. It matters not a bit if it will improve your health, your appearance or your wallet. If there is effort needed, this is exactly where we choke! Why is that?
What holds us back?
For starters, we seem hard-wired to avoid discomfort. The path of least resistance beckons us to procrastinate. In fact, once we have a negative thought about what we said we would do, it quickly generates others. This negative self-talk is stellar at keeping us in bed or reaching for a donut! In other words, a negative mindset is the pre-cursor monologue to procrastination. So now what?
Here’s how I started overcoming the natural inertia to avoid discomfort. Growing up in the Midwest, I abhorred hearing the alarm in the morning, especially during the cold dark winter months. Waking up to that shrill alert while burrowed under the warm covers…well getting out of bed to work out was the last thing I felt like doing. But you know what? I finally told myself, “You’re never going to feel like springing out of bed, so just do it and then you’ll be fine.” Amazingly, this little mantra worked!
In other words, Less thinking and more action is the formula for kicking procrastination to the curb! I continue to move closer towards my goals, using this approach:
- Set a goal
- Identify the initial small steps to achieve it
- Schedule those actions in my calendar
- Don’t overthink!
- Count out loud: 3, 2, 1…do it!
